Jones Falls Watershed awarded $33,000 to plant 485 trees in city neighborhoods

The Chesapeake Bay Trust has awarded the Jones Falls Watershed Association a $33,000 grant, in partnership with the Greater Homewood Community Corp.(GHCC), to plant 485 trees in Baltimore City neighborhoods, parks, near schools and streets and other public right of ways. GHCC will receive $10,700 for their portion of the overall project.

Banner Neighborhoods an Umbrella for Many

Banner Neighborhoods is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting residents in their efforts to enhance the quality of life throughout 10 southeast Baltimore communities. It offers a wide variety of programs designed to strengthen the community, ranging from youth activities, to senior home maintenance, to beautification projects. Banner has been an early partner in Mayor Dixon’s and the Baltimore Community Foundation’s Initiative for a Cleaner Greener Baltimore.

Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge Update

The Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge (BNEC), a pilot program to help residents save money on their energy bills, is moving full speed ahead. Working in eight neighborhoods across the city, BNEC has trained over 100 Neighborhood Energy Captains, volunteers who help share the program with their neighbors. With the support of AmeriCorps volunteers, the Captains are developing outreach strategies tailored to their own neighborhoods, in some cases even creating ‘battle plans’ complete with maps and lists of names of people to speak with.

The official winner of the AFRO Clean-Green Block Contest for 2009 is the 1200 Block of Whatcoat Street in Sandtown-Winchester. Mayor Sheila Dixon will took a "Neighborhood Appreciation Day" trolley tour of the winning block and the three finalists on Saturday, October 3 – 11:00 am to 1:00 pm to congratulate them on their tremendous efforts.

Baltimore City DGS Hits the Ground Running with Clean, Green Energy Efficiency

The newest City agency, the Department of General Services (DGS) has hit the ground running by leading the charge in saving energy dollars for municipal government. It does this through renewable energy, energy audits, and energy performance contracts. These projects pay for themselves in costs savings and nearly all provide environmental benefits as well. DGS does this through a series of energy projects that, when combined, save the City over $6 million a year. These projects are carefully monitored by the experienced engineers and staff of the DGS Energy Division.

Baltimore City trash, recycling and yard waste

Trash and recycling will not be picked up on Wednesday, November 11; the make up day is the following Saturday, November 14.

Trash and recycling will not be picked up on Thursday, November 26; the make up day is the following Saturday, November 28.
Trash and recycling will be picked up on Friday, November 27 even though it is a City Furlough Day.
Leaves and yard waste will be picked up on your trash collection day. Leaf collection continues through Friday, January 29, 2010. Place leaves in clear or labeled bags. Though leaf collection is unlimited, please limit bagged leaves to 10 per pickup. Drop off bagged leaves, Mon. thru Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 5 locations: 6101 Bowleys La.; 2840 Sisson St.; 5030 Reisterstown Rd.; 6100 Quarantine Rd.; 701 Reedbird Ave

What began as a small picnic 14 years ago has blossomed into a great party honoring community greeners for their outstanding work. TreeBaltimore/Constellation Energy

Saturday, Nov. 7th, 9 a.m.-noon
Join Mayor Sheila Dixon, TreeBaltimore and Constellation Energy to announce a new partnership to help increase Baltimore’s tree canopy. The event will include plantings of street, park and yard trees. FREE trees will also be available to City residents. BikeBaltimore will deliver trees on bike carts to residents who have requested trees in advance. To order your tree, please call 410-396-7900.

ALL City buildings WILL BE CLOSED with the exception of the Police Headquarters complex.
This means that citizens will be unable to pay City bills or obtain permits in person at
City offices.
