October 2008 Newsletter Connections
Leaf Season is Here - Leave the Leaves to Us!
The City will begin annual collection of bagged leaves the first week of October through the last week of January.
DO: Place bagged leaves out on your SECOND weekly trash collection day – we will collect unlimited bagged leaves on that second collection day.
Keep the gutters around your home clean and clear of leaves and debris -- clogged gutters do not allow proper storm water run off and contribute to flooding - in cold temperatures - this can mean ice on your street!
TIP:
To keep things really green
Use a mulching mower to shred light leaf accumulation
then leave it in place to feed your lawn.

Turning Vacant Lots into Garden Plots
Saturday, October 18th beginning at 8 a.m all across the city!
Registration Deadline is Friday, October 10, 2008.
Communities are encouraged to line up volunteers and register now!
For more information or to sign up, call 311.
This year’s Fall Harvest theme will showcase how communities come
together to transform vacant sites into green urban spaces. Gardens will
be highlighted that have been sustained over extended periods of time by
the hard work and dedication of community volunteers.
As always, this day also focuses on joining together with your neighbors
and choosing a location(s) which needs a special clean-up or green-up –
such as an alley, lot or illegal dumping site. DPW will provide brooms,
rakes and bags for volunteers to clean and remove debris from these
neighborhoods.
