Single Stream Curbside Recycling

Overview

If you’ve ever pulled your recycling bins out to the curb late at night and wondered, “Does this really matter?” –– it does! The more waste tonnage diverted from our traditional waste stream for reuse the better for Baltimore and its residents. You save materials from entering landfills or polluting our larger environment – materials that simply don’t belong anywhere but in a recycle bin destined for reuse.

Your Bureau of Solid Waste collects and delivers your recyclables to Waste Management’s Recycle America state-of-the-art single-stream facility in Jessup, MD.

Mixed recyclables are unloaded onto a conveyor belt and travel through a 50,000 square foot building fully automated to sort each material with very little human intervention. Magnets, blowers and sieves separate materials with workers pulling out plastic bags that get snared in the machinery.

Once sorted, each material type is baled into one ton units then sold on the open market to firms who re-process the materials for reuse in new products.
